BUXTON RACEWAY
DRIVERS AND STAFF NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2008!
WELCOME
This newsletter heralds just over the half way stage in our 2008
season, a season of mixed fortunes in many ways, and one that our
economic climate continues to have a big say in.
POINTS CHARTS/GRADING LISTS
Your official graders will have provided a grading list, if you are
due to change grade, or if not there will be a list of the points to
date [on site soon]. These will be attached [on site]
for the formula/s you have licensed for. If you are due to change your
grade, please make sure your roof colour is correctly painted.
CONSTRUCTION RULES 2009
Yes it is time again for us to start looking at construction rules
for all our formulas for 2009. Now is the time to let us have your
thoughts. If we do not hear from you we will assume you are all happy
with what we have now.
NATIONAL BANGERS
The KOP has been and gone, with many diverse thoughts and comments
on the forums. These will be borne in mind when planning for next year,
and this will initially be discussed at Board of Control.
The 2 litre Bangers return on 17th August for the Peggy Marson Memorial
Trophy. This is normally a well-supported event and to give it the
publicity it deserves we would welcome your bookings as soon as you
like.
Looking forward to 7th September, it is the 7th Annual Team Event,
featuring 2 litre cars. As usual there will be £500 up for grabs by the
winning team, and bookings for this are also welcome as soon as you
wish. We need the team colour, team name and the individual team member
details.
Looking forward again – this time to 5th October we stage our “Farewell
to Lee Tomlinson” meeting, ahead of Lee emigrating to New Zealand in
December. Lenny from JL Videos will be sponsoring the trophies for the
banger final, and a free choice of DVD to the Best Presented car, the
Most Wrecked and the Most Destructive Driver.
The first race on the day will be for the Tom Thompson Memorial Trophy.
Tom was a very good friend to the Jerky Boys and will be sadly missed.
Added prize money on this event is 1st £50 2nd £30 3rd £20.
Looking even further forward to 9th November – the ORCi Team Race moves
to Mildenhall. As usual we are looking for eight drivers to represent us
and it will be first come first served. We have had complaints from
drivers in the past that they would have done the meeting if invited –
you are ALL invited - this is your invitation.
SUPER BANGERS
The Super Bangers have an extra event on 27th July, as the GT Hot
Rod visit has been cancelled. Our thanks go to Malc Haslam for ringing
around the drivers to get their commitment to this extra event.
The Supers are also with us on 25th August. This is earmarked to be the
KJR Automotive Challenge but maybe replaced by sponsorship from Calor
Gas. Apologies that we cannot give you any further details at this time
as it is still in the negotiation stage.
Super Bangers
Extra Date!! Startrax are holding an out of season meeting on the
28th DECEMBER at Belle Vue Stadium Manchester. It will be the first time
in a number of years that the Super Bangers have raced on shale.
Startrax are looking to host a MINIMUM of 10 cars, so hold off your
rebuilds until January!! There wont be much loose shale on the track
surface as the excess will be swept off as the track isn’t used during
that part of the year. Usual Buxton tyre rules apply to keep it fair for
everyone. Day licences will be accepted. If you want to take part, then
PLEASE book in with Steph on 0845 4274788 or steph@startrax.info . If
support is good then there is the possibility of further meetings in '09
if car numbers can sustain it.
BOMBERS
Bombers return for their British Championship on Bank Holiday Monday
25th August and again standard Banger Prize Money will be paid as long
as there are no team colours or identification marks on cars. I am
presently talking to an interested party about extra sponsorship for
this event, which may well increase the purse.
FORMULA MINISTOX
Formula MiniStox are with us on 17th August.
HOT RODS
Just one outing at Buxton and that is on 17th August for the Ace
Gearbox Championship. Away dates will be reproduced later in the
newsletter.
HOT FORDS
For the benefit of those drivers who do not have access to the
Raceway Forum, I have reproduced in full the posting from Gareth “Gruff”
Davies. Many drivers have added their own thoughts at losing Gruff, and
I would just like to add mine and say a massive thanks for his help and
support over the years.
Dear All,
I know that not everyone has internet access, but I'm sure this
announcement will be repeated in the next newsletter or by word of
mouth.
After 10 years at the raceway and 8 years since founding the Hot Ford
formula, I am standing down as Hot Ford Rep. and am ceasing my official
relationship with the Raceway to pursue a racing career with my family
elsewhere in the oval racing world.
It’s not a decision I've taken lightly and I am not very happy about
doing this but I feel strongly about recent on- track "incidents" and
the way in which these have (not) been dealt with. I'm not going to go
into detail here on a public forum, but I feel I owe the HF drivers some
brief explanation. I am happy to answer any individual questions for a
short time via the usual contact methods in the Rulebook.
After that, I would ask that drivers refer any future issues regarding
Hot Fords, including future technical specifications to the Raceway
Office.
As I also am the Technical contact for RookiRods and new drivers, I
would ask that these such queries are re-directed in the same way.
I've made many friendships which I wouldn’t have done had I not stood as
Rep since the formula started and I'm sure these will continue (the oval
world is a small place!!) Thanks to all those who have supported me
during this time - you know who you are.

BOC VACANCY
This now leaves us with a vacancy on the Board of Control for a Hot

have your support. If you have a van and intend entering please ring the

Just a reminder that Rookirods will be racing at Belle Vue Stadium in
Manchester on Sunday November 2nd start time 3.30pm. This is the big

years. The large crowd enjoy the 'rods and don’t forget there is the
huge end of meeting firework display. Book in now with Steph on 0845

first come – first served. Please book in as soon as you can.
HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE
This report tells you where we are up to and how your £1 levy is
being spent:
Health and Safety Update from the ORC - - 1st July 2008!
As announced earlier this year the ORC is undertaking a complete review
of the Health & Safety of Drivers, Staff and Spectators at our race
events. This review will take place over the next three years and is
designed to increase the awareness of all of us to the importance of
making our sport as safe as possible for all who are involved in it.
We all accept that Motor Racing is dangerous but this doesn't mean that
we shouldn't ensure that the risks are kept to a minimum so that we can
all enjoy ourselves in what is, after all, our hobby.
Increasingly, the authorities are taking an interest in our sport and we
must demonstrate to them that we take safety seriously and are the best
people to ensure that Health & Safety matters are an ongoing concern to
us all.
At the beginning of this season the ORC appointed two highly regarded
professional consultants to assist them with Health and Safety matters.
Their brief was to deal with the whole spectrum of H&S throughout our
sport. They are focusing, in the first instance, on the re writing of
the Code of Practice for Short Circuit Oval Racing which is a document
which was first published in 1994. Also they are producing a new Noise
Testing procedure for all formulas, which is being trailed with BriSCA
F1 Stock Cars.
The Code of Practice is almost complete and will be going to print next
month and will be circulated shortly after that. The Noise testing
procedure is well underway and we have already seen the Acoustic
Engineers at race meetings and also they have visited various drivers’
workshops. It is hoped that a static noise testing procedure will be in
place by the end of this year and we will then see the development of an
Environmental Noise Impact Criteria for Oval Racing.
We are in the initial stages of developing a series of training
programmes for our Staff and Officials, which will take place over the
winter months. These will range from basic Fire and Safety Training
right up to IOSH and NEBOSH qualifications.
Starting next month an online accident reporting facility will be
available for all promoters to report all accidents and near misses at
each of their race meetings. All BriSCA and ORC promoters have agreed to
take part in this and these will be analysed on a regular basis by the
Health & Safety Consultants and any trends can be identified and action
taken to improve the safety of Drivers, Staff and Spectators.
Our Noise Consultants will also be reviewing another Code of Practice,
which was produced over a decade ago. This was entitled 'Code of
Practice for the Control of Noise from Oval Racing' and is in need of an
update because of changes in legislation.
Add to the above a great deal of work being carried out in producing new
ORC Sport Wide Guidelines and you will see that there is much to be
done. As you can imagine all the above is costing a great deal of money
and this is being provided by us all - Promoters, Drivers (through the
£1 Levy) and our Insurers. It will mean that everyone within our sport
and those outside know that we take Safety seriously as well as having
consideration for those that are affected by it.
